Lodging your income tax return
What Information Do I Need?
To lodge your tax return, you’ll need to provide us with any documents and records that we can’t automatically access, such as:
- Employment and government income: Payment summaries and income statements, including any government payments.
- Investment income: Interest, dividends, and managed fund annual statements.
- Rental income: Annual figures for properties, including short-stay platforms.
- Business and platform income: Sole trader/ABN income and sharing-economy earnings (e.g., Uber, Airtasker).
- Other income: Foreign income, capital gains events (including crypto), and employee share scheme amounts.
- Work-related deductions: Totals for vehicle use, travel, uniforms/protective gear, tools, union/association fees, subscriptions; plus home-office hours and phone/internet; self-education and professional development.
- Donations and insurance: Deductible gifts and income-protection premiums paid personally.
- Offsets and rebates: Private health insurance rebate statement and spouse details if claiming offsets.
- PAYG instalments: IAS amounts paid during the year.
- Lodgement details: Bank BSB/account for refund or payment, TFN, date of birth, and current address.
Can I lodge my tax return after October 31st, 2025?
Yes, you can lodge after 31 October 2025, but the ATO may apply a Failure to lodge on time (FTL) penalty.
If you use a registered tax agent, many clients have later lodgment dates under the ATO’s registered agent lodgment program; your exact date depends on your circumstances and when you engaged the agent.
If you can’t lodge by the due date, you or your agent can request a lodgment deferral in exceptional circumstances to avoid an FTL penalty. Any unpaid tax attracts general interest charge until paid, and the ATO may take compliance action if you don’t lodge.
How long will it take to receive my tax return?
Most tax returns lodged electronically via a tax agent are processed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) within two weeks (10 to 14 business days). However, this may depend on:
- The time of Lodgement
- Whether the ATO needs to cross check information with other government agencies (like Services Australia or Child Support)
- You have a tax debt or outstanding amounts with other government agencies
- If there are data discrepancies that need review
- You are insolvent
- If the ATO has questions about information provided in your tax return
